Temple Overview: The Sri Govindaraja Swamy Temple is an ancient and massive temple complex located in the heart of Tirupati. Dedicated to the elder brother of Lord Venkateswara, it is famous for its towering seven-story Rajagopuram, which can be seen from almost anywhere in the city. The presiding deity, Lord Govindaraja Swamy, is seen in a unique "Sayana" (reclining) posture on the serpent Adisesha. Managed by TTD, this temple is a vital part of the Tirupati pilgrimage and is often the first major shrine devotees visit due to its proximity to the transport hubs.
History & Legend:
Consecrated in 1130 AD by the great saint Sri Ramanujacharya, the temple has a deep connection with the Tirumala legend. It is said that Govindaraja Swamy was responsible for managing the accounts and wealth for the wedding of Lord Venkateswara and Goddess Padmavathi. Exhausted by the task, he fell asleep using the "Kuncham" (measuring vessel) as a pillow, which is why he is depicted in a reclining state. Historically, the temple site previously housed a shrine to Sri Parthasarathi Swamy before the current main deity was installed.

Temple Timings(Daily)

Temple Opening: 05:00 AM.
Viswaroopa Darshanam: 05:30 AM – 06:30 AM (Free for all).
Morning Sarva Darshan: 09:30 AM – 12:30 PM.
Afternoon Sarva Darshan: 01:30 PM – 04:45 PM.
Evening Sarva Darshan: 06:00 PM – 08:30 PM.
Night Closure: 09:30 PM (After Ekantha Seva).
Note: Brief breaks for Naivedyam (food offering) occur between 12:30 PM–01:30 PM and 05:00 PM–06:00 PM.

Detailed Darshanam Types & Bookings

Sarva Darshan (Free): The standard walk-in entry. Available throughout the day except during ritual breaks.
Special Entrance Darshan (₹5): A nominal fee for a slightly faster queue. Tickets can be bought at the offline counter inside the temple.
Quick Darshan (₹20): The fastest entry available for general pilgrims. Tickets are available at the counter near the main entrance.
Free Small Laddu: Pilgrims visiting during the early morning hours (Suprabhatham to Archananthara Darshan) are often provided a small free laddu.

Sevas & Rituals: Timings & How To Book

Daily Sevas:
Suprabhatham (05:00 AM): Ritual to awaken the Lord. Cost: ₹10.
Thomala Seva (06:30 AM): Floral decoration. Cost: ₹10.
Sahasranamarchana (07:30 AM): Chanting 1,000 names. Cost: ₹10.
Ekantha Seva (09:00 PM): The final sleep ritual. Cost: ₹10.
How to Book Sevas: Most daily sevas for this temple are booked offline at the temple Arjitham counters on a first-come, first-served basis. Limited quotas for major sevas like Kalyanotsavam are released on the official TTD website monthly.
VIP & Protocol Entry: VIPs and those with high-level recommendation letters are usually accommodated during the morning and evening "Break" slots. Unlike Tirumala, there is no formal L1/L2/L3 ticketing system here; protocol is managed locally by temple authorities during Darshan hours.

Vaikuntha Ekadashi: January 1, 2026. (The year's biggest event; devotees pass through the North Gate).
Goda Kalyanam: January 16, 2026. (Celebrated at the Sri Andal shrine within the complex).
Rathasaptami: January 25, 2026. (One-day chariot festival with multiple vahanam processions).
Annual Brahmotsavam: May 2026. (A grand 9-day festival featuring the Garuda Vahanam and Rathotsavam).

Annaprasdham & Prasadham

The Laddu: The temple has its own Laddu counter selling big and small laddus similar to the Tirumala recipe.
Free Meals: TTD provides free Annaprasadham at a dedicated hall near the temple entrance.
Lunch: 11:30 AM to 02:30 PM.
Dinner: 07:30 PM to 09:30 PM.
Salted Prasadham: Traditional temple Pulihora (Tamarind Rice) is highly recommended

Dress Code & Etiquette

Men: Traditional Dhoti or Kurta-Pyjama. Trousers are allowed for general darshan, but traditional wear is preferred.
Women: Saree or Chudidar with Dupatta.
Etiquette: Photography is strictly prohibited inside the sanctum. Footwear must be deposited at the free counter outside the Rajagopuram.

Location: Situated within 200 meters of the Tirupati Main Railway Station (East side).
Accessibility: The temple is on level ground, making it very easy for seniors.
Transport: While it is walking distance from the station, we recommend a Tirupati360 Cab for safe luggage storage and comfort, as the surrounding market streets are very congested.
